PASS REQUIREMENTS FOR THE SENIOR CERTFICATE (SC)

Adult students 21 years and older and out of school youth 18-21 years entering the Sc without credits must:

  • Offer a minimum of six (6) subjects selected from the list below
  • Must include two (2) official languages, of which one must be the Language of Learning and Teaching (LOLT)
  • One of the languages must be at Home Language level and the other at least at First Additional language level.
  • Pass at least five subjects, provided they:
  • Obtain at least 40% in three (3) subjects which include Home Language and 30% in the remaining two subjects of the SC subjects listed in this brochure.
  • Obtain a sub-minimum of 20% in the failed sixth subject in the final examination.
  • No aggregate requirement for candidates taking all six (6) Senior Certificate subjects.
  • One subject condonation at 20%, 30% or 40% is permitted if the candidate is short of one subject to obtain the qualification.
  • No immigrant concession will be granted

COMBINATIONS OF PREVIOUS CREDITS / RESULTS

Principles for Combinations
  • A candidate may combine any number of previous credits from the SC, NSC or N3 languages.
  • The best six (6) subjects will be used in the combination.
  • A candidate must pass at least 5 subjects in the combination.
  • Only pass subjects will be utilised for combination purpose.
  • A candidate must offer a minimum of one SC subject in the combination and that subject must be passed 30%.
  • The subminimum requirement of one subject at 20% will apply to all candidates including those requesting combinations.
  • A candidate can receive only one condonation, either on aggregate (total marks) or subject.
  • The aggregate of 800 marks will only apply when combining the SC with SC subjects and N3 languages. No aggregate will apply for combining the SC with NSC subjects.
  • Similar subjects from different qualifications cannot be used to combine results viz. Biology and Life Sciences, English Home Language/First Additional Language and Business English. etc.

WHO CAN WRITE THE SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NQF4) EXAMINATION

SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENS
  • A person must be 21 years and older.
  • Certified copy of Identity document (ID)
  • Proof of address
  • A certified copy of your previous results / school report. (Passed ABET L4, GETC (NQF1) / Grade 9 / Std 7 or higher or SC results.
  • A recognised equivalent qualification obtained at NQF level1, which requires two official languages.
  • Persons with incomplete Senior Certificate.
  • Persons with an incomplete National Senior Certficate and whose School Based Assessment (SBA) validity has expired.

Only in exceptional cases, out of school youth who passed Grade 9 / ABET L4 or obtained a recognised equivalent qualification at NQF level 1, which requires two official languages and who are 18-20 years old, could not complete their school education, due to circumstances beyond their control, can apply to the Head, Western Cape Education Department to write the SC examination.

NON-SOUTH AFRICAN CITIZENS
  • Certified copy of valid passport / visa or study permit.
  • Copy of previous results or highest qualifications (These qualifications must be endorsed / certified by SAQA)
  • Proof of address.

APPROVED SUBJECTS FOR SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NQF4) EXAMINATION

Candidates can register to write exams for one or more subjects that appears in the list below. You need to write six (6) subjects and pass at least five (5) subjects, and a maximum of six subjects in one year. You can register to write exams for only one subject and a maximum of six subjects in one year. PLEASE NOTE: Candidates can only register for Computer Applications Technology (CAT) at an CLC / institution that offers the subject and not online.

Promotion requirements for combination
  •  Candidate wrote six subjects or more.
  • Pass at least five of the six or more subjects.
  • Pass at least one SC subject in the combination at 30%.
  • The best 6 subjects will be used in the combination including the best two languages (one must be Home Languages or First Language) will be taken into consideration.
  • Pass two (2) languages, one Home languages or First Languages level at 40% and the other on First Additional Language/ Second Language level at 30%. N3 languages passed at 40%.
  • A candidate may pass two languages at Home Languages or First Languages level.
  • One of the languages should be a LOLT language.
  • Obtained at least 30% in the NSC subjects.
  • Satisfy the aggregate of 800 marks when combining to SC and N3 languages.
  • The subminimum of 20% will apply for the 6th subject.
  • One subject condonation (maximum 2%) at 40% or 33.3% or 30% or 20% if the candidate is short of one subject to obtain the qualification or an aggregate condonation on 790 will apply.

REGISTRATION FOR SENIOR CERTFICATE EXAMINATION IN MAY-JUNE EACH YEAR

Candidates who are affiliated to a Community Learning Centre (CLC) or Satellite Learning Centre (SLC) for tuition, should register at the CLC /SLC

Candidates who study on their own can register online on the website of the Western Cape Education Department at Http//wced.school.za (adult matric)

Applications open on 1 October and close on 30 November each year.
